Giving Hope for the foster care journey, one child at a time.
We Are Excited To Introduce Our Newest Initiative
The Hope House

The Why

Joy Closet has seen so many stories about children being taken from their homes and social workers not being able to immediately find a placement for them. These children end up sleeping on a couch or air mattress in a DCBS office. This is heartbreaking. No child should have to end up in this situation, after the traumatic experience of being removed from their home. Joy Closet’s solution is the Hope House.

The Hope House will be a home where the Case Workers and the children can go on removal day. In most situations, workers have no other choice than to bring the children back to their office on removal day. The children, who have likely just experienced a very traumatic situation are taken to a sterile office to sit and wait quietly while workers search for a placement for them. Unfortunately, they are often listening to many rejections before the worker is able to find a family to say yes, which potentially adds to their distress.

The Solution

Provide a friendly home setting where children can go to on removal day with the following amenities:

  • Loving environment

  • Bedrooms for naps or overnight stays

  • Stocked kitchen for a meal of the child's choice

  • All hygiene items for bath time

  • Toys, crafts, gaming area, etc for unwinding from the day's events

  • Office space for DCBS workers to use during the stay

The goal of the home is to reduced the amount of trauma that the child experiences on removal day. This home will allow us to bathe and feed them, and also get their mind off of what is currently happening and allow them to feel comfortable in a home setting versus being in the DCBS office setting.

Furniture & Contents (Once House Is Established)

When we first met with Heather at Joy Closet she described what most removal days look like for children in our community. Typically these children are taken from their families and end up sleeping in government offices until a placement is found. The thought of knowing these kids, on their toughest days, end up in a less-than-inviting, government office was heartbreaking. We knew we had to do something to help these children, and that’s when Heather told us about Joy Closet's vision for the Hope House.

Heather described their vision for the Hope House, and it was exactly what the community needs - an inviting and calming place for children to go while waiting on a placement. We listened to her describe what this home would look like and how it would impact the children who will be utilizing it and all we could think was YES, we want to help make this vision a reality. Our passion here at Legacy Metals is to help those who can't help themselves, so we knew this was a project we wanted to be involved with.

When we heard the foster statistics and numbers here within our very own community, it was undeniably evident that this home was a great need. We immediately began working on a blueprint for the Hope House and were able to design it to fit the vision that would best serve these children.

We can't wait to see this project come to fruition and we encourage you to see how you can participate to make this great need a reality in our community. If you can't donate with funds or contribute with trade skills - sharing the vision with others will help us spread the word about the Hope House. The more people who know about the Hope House, the better!
